The challenge

Make plant gifting a brag-worthy proposition…

In early October, we set out to solve the design brief from Design Days 23 from Salesforce India.

At first, plant gifting looked like a typical e-commerce task, nothing different from an Amazon gifting flow. The theme of "relationship design" made all the difference.

First thought

First thought

In this era, where showing off & status quo are so important, why would someone think of gifting plants?

That's why you see people flaunting fancy perfumes and shiny watches. Ever thought of gifting a plant? At most, you consider a bouquet.

There's an unspoken rule: 'The more brag-worthy the gift, the more impressive the giver.'

The hesitation in plant gifting

Breakdown of the problem

We engaged with 7 individuals who love gifting something (literally anything) to their loved ones.

The lack of adoption to gift plants can be attributed to several factors

Hesitation in plant gifting

Breakdown of the problem

We engaged with 7 individuals who love gifting something (literally anything) to their loved ones.

The lack of adoption to gift plants can be attributed to several factors

Low intent to nurture plants

The gift receiver may not have an active interest in planting, leading to a loss of motivation to maintain plants.

Missing joy of gift selection

The joy of gifting lies in the dopamine rush of selecting and curating, but with plants, personalization is limited.

Lack of planting knowledge

Plant receivers may lack the knowledge and intrinsic motivation needed for successful plant care and nurturing.

Low recall value

Plants, unlike watches or perfumes, are easily forgotten, situated on balconies with fewer memorable interactions.

WHAT'S STOPPING YOU FROM GIFTING PLANTS?

"I avoid gifting plants because, if my friend doesn't care for it, the plant may die, and it's never a good feeling…"

The constraint

The gifted plants often do not receive the attention & consistent care they need from the recipients and hence wither soon

The opportunity - Plant partners

How might we make planting fun, and collaborative, and include learning on the go while fostering shared bonds over plants?

How might we make planting fun, and collaborative, and include learning on the go while fostering shared bonds over plants?

Wait, what are plant partners?

Recognizing that many individuals find the solo journey of plant care daunting and mundane, Leafish introduces the concept of "Plant Partners."

Much like studying alone for exams can be tedious, planting alone often lacks excitement.

Plant partners is a concept wherein 2 people nurture plants together at their respective homes. It’s all based on the concept of shared plant journaling.

First time experience for Journeys

What is Leafish journeys?

Journeys is our alternative to the home page, where you can start a journey with a plant partner.

The Journeys screen is crucial for users starting their plant partner journey; if not clear, it may cause drop-offs at the very top of the funnel.

The requirements of the journeys page for a first time user -

  • Mention journey steps upfront for transparency and easy understanding.

  1. In gifting scenarios, they have the option to select for themselves and purchase a plant for their partner as well.

Setting preferences for gifting

In Leafish, gifting takes a unique path compared to traditional e-commerce like Amazon. Instead of the usual steps of selecting a plant, choosing gifting options, and making a payment, we've crafted a distinct experience.

Buying plants for you and your partner should feel as liberating as crafting your favorite Subway sandwich!

❋ Personalizing Yash’s gifting experience ❋

The gift-shopping experience

  • Low effort section — Most people prefer a plant that requires low effort. This led to the creation of the top section of the shopping screen.

  1. Leafish baskets — To spice things up, we introduced baskets featuring plants and other complementary products for an exciting gifting experience.

Shortlisting the products to buy

Now if you’re buying a plant for your partner as well as yourself —

This prompts us to consider two questions

  • Why should users go through the process of choosing plants twice, back to back?

  1. Imagine if Yash has a cactus, which grows fully in a few days, and his friend, Sneha has a bonsai that takes longer. They wouldn’t be on the same page, right?

The solution ~ Leafish nudges the sender, prompting them to purchase the same plant for themselves.

It not only establishes relatability between partners but also reduces friction during the buying process.

Breaking the usual pattern of checkout

The traditional cart screen proved ineffective due to its complexity, overwhelming users with too much information & input points. It would be a long & repetitive process.

Defining the new cart screen —

  • The user’s and their partner’s carts should be visible in the first fold along with different amounts spent on the respective carts.

  1. The user should be able to select the address and the delivery date on the same screen.

In the final checkout flow, we decided to progressively disclose delivery details, ensuring users aren’t overwhelmed with too many decisions at once.

The plant partners’ phase

Let’s examine gifting from a first principles standpoint.

Why do we gift? Gifting is a way to express love towards someone; indeed, it’s a love language. The true goal of Leafish is to nurture relationships through plant gifting.

Introducing weekly plant journaling

Traditionally, journaling is high-friction due to the combination of high effort & low motivation.

Defining the journaling experience to solve for high effort + low motivation

  1. Journaling happens weekly on Sundays, with a deliberate choice for a single, upfront, and easily discoverable entry point.

  1. Users can journal all plants at once, reducing the need for repeated searches.

To materialize this idea, we began drafting flows for the plant journaling.

The goal — To make the plant journaling experience as quick as having your morning tea & to integrate Leafish updates in your Sunday social media routine.

Picture a Sunday morning – warm sunlight streaming through your window, a cozy chair, and a cup of tea in hand while catching up on social media updates from friends and family.

To leave no stone unturned — Edge cases

High-friction activities like journaling never unfold as smoothly as expected. We thought of scenarios where things could go wrong while journaling!

Constantly questioning ‘WHAT IF’ became our lifeline!

  1. What if someone wants to add progress on Thursday? The journal should be locked to prevent a decrease in relatability and progress discrepancy, aligning with our decision to journal only on Sundays.

  1. What if they forget to journal?

  1. What if a user gets an important call and has to stop the journaling midway?

  1. What if a user is starting their first journal — can we celebrate?

Metrics to measure success

If we were to ship this design, there are some metrics we would need to monitor, to be able to measure the impact.

  1. Adoption — Percentage of users participating in plant journeys gifting vs. solo plant gifting.

  1. Weekly retention — Number of users participating in weekly plant journeys documented.

  1. Average order value for gifting — Increase AOV through cross-selling plant hampers.

The real impact would be the number of conversations ignited through plant gifting.

Next steps, if we had more time…

Time to retrospect & next steps

  1. Users might get bored of journaling after a few weeks. How can we solve for that?

  1. Improving the FTUX for journeys by making it more visual & bite-sized!

  1. Next, designing the onboarding for gift recipients.

Exploring sustainability and strategies for wider adoption of the concept.
